That same week, a group of twelve faithful members of that team arranged a meeting with him in a restaurant in the outskirts of Barcelona, ready to leave Montesa and start a new and amazing adventure with him. A few days later he left the company and, contrary to what has been said by many, he did not have any interest whatsoever in creating a new company.īut Don Paco hadn´t considered the reaction that his leaving the company would have in the team of people that throughout the years he himself had created. He could have vetoed the decision but he did not: the harm was already done and he thought that he would never again feel at ease in that company. Their argument was that the great Italian and English motorcycle companies were also abandoning the sporting events and moreover that same year the spanish government was implementing The National Stabilization Plan (El Plan de Estabilización Nacional), which was very restrictive.īultó immediately recognised all this for what it really was: the decision of abandoning the competition, which taking into account the good economic situation of the company did not imply an excessive expense, was really an attack towards him, a way to annul the leadership that he undoubtedly had within the company. In that meeting, Permanyer and José Luis Milá announced to Bultó that they had decided to stop all sporting activities and focus on improving the commercial models.
Nevertheless, in April of that year, an apparently common meeting of the members of the Board of Directors was going to change the history of motorcycling forever. All of the factory’s production was sold in advance and its competition team won every race they participated in. Bultó and Pedro Permanyer, the company was going through very good times, in terms of industry and sporting achievements. Completed in December 2006 and freshly prepared for sale in March 2007, the machine comes with bill of sale, restoration invoices, and Certificate of Title.By the beginning of 1958 Montesa was leading the Spanish motorcycle market. The engine was rebuilt by Bultaco specialists BR Enterprises, with assorted parts sourced from Hughs Bultaco and some provided by Jim himself. It was then completely dismantled and restored by Kevin Hirsch, Jim Pomeroy and Bruce Reynolds to factory specification, using all original parts wherever possible. The machine was garage-stored in San Francisco and moved to the Pomeroy residence in Yakima, WA in 2005 for restoration.
Sold new in the USA, this Pursang was raced in AHRMA vintage events by previous owner Bob Hurst, from whom it was purchased in 1998. Spurred on by the delirious Spanish fans, he never looked back and won with ease. Despite the extra work involved, he ended up in pole position for the race and by the end of the first lap had taken the lead. To begin with, this amounted to little more than the provision of a new Pursang and an entry into the Spanish Grand Prix - Jim had no mechanic and had to assemble the bike himself. Jim Pomeroy had been sent to Europe to gain experience at the World level by the US Bultaco importer, and the young American received a limited measure of support from the factory. In so doing, he became the youngest rider to win a World Championship M-X GP, the 1st rider ever to win such an event on his debut, the 1st American to win a World Championship M-X GP, the 1st American to lead the World Championship, and the 1st rider to win on a Spanish motorcycle. Half of the sale proceeds will be paid into a trust fund for Jims daughter: The Jamie Lee Pomeroy Trust.Īged 20, Jim Pomeroy made one of the most dramatic international debuts in the history of off-road motorcycle sport when he won the Spanish Grand Prix in 1973, the opening round of that years 250cc World Championship. This machine is presented as a tribute to the late, legendary dirt racer, Jim Pomeroy, who was tragically killed in an accident last August.
